Philly Bands Don’t Disappoint

Friday night was a great night for music in the city and a couple of Philly bands, plus one from Brooklyn, did not disappoint.

Johnny Brenda’s was all about the brass. Pitch Blak, from Brooklyn, combine Hip-hop and Brass to form a great sounding and highly entertaining experience.  Band members took turn with MC duties while the band kicked out solid jazz-funk. I caught the early set at 9:00PM so the crowd was a little light, but those that were there couldn’t help but dance.

Check out a bit of video:

West Philadelphia Orchestra is what I came out for. If you’re not familiar they are a 12-13 piece Balkan/Jazz/Gypsy fusion band that has been performing in the area since 2006. They can be seen every month at Underground Arts and other locales around town.

The musicians in this band are some of the best in the city. Their Bulgarian-born vocalist, Petia, has an infectious energy that makes every sone fun, even when you don’t understand the words. The band also performs a few instrumentals and the music is great enough that the lack of vocals doesn’t take away from the entertainment value.

They put together another great show. Here’s a sampling.

After that we ran over to Frank Bradley’s and took in York Street Hustle. Nobody does 60’s-70’s R&B and Soul better.

Keep an eye our for future dates. All 3 acts are worth listening to and checking out.
