Philly Weekend Picks: Labor Day 2015

If you’re one of the few still in town this weekend and don’t have friends inviting you for a barbecue and you don’t want to go to Made In America we have a couple of picks. Overall, the options are few, but one major option that should keep you busy is the 19th Annual Philadelphia Fringe Festival.

The Festival brings hundreds of artists (dance, theater, performance, music) to Philadelphia for two weeks of performances throughout the city. I volunteered for the first one back in 1996 and have seen it grow into a major festival. Granted, with that growth ticket prices have increased and it’s not as “fringy” as I’d prefer. That being said, there is an insane amount of quality performances going on and you should be able to find something every day for the next two weeks.

In addition to the FRINGE FESTIVAL, there is a Late Night Cabaret spinoff going on nightly at Underground Arts. The Cabaret was originally a part of the Fringe where they’d have an open mic night and performers would do pieces of their productions, mostly while drunk. It was always my favorite part of the Fringe. The Late Cabaret goes the length of the Fringe and features a bunch of free, local entertainment.

Philly’s own BLACK LANDLORD kick off the cabaret tonight. Doors are at 10:00. These guys don’t play out that often so don’t miss out. If you don’t know them, they are one of the best live acts in Philly…they also do the song featured in the jawnville podcast.

That’s what we got. Made In America, Temple vs. Penn State should keep a lot of us busy. But, if you’re looking for something else to do Fringe it out. There are performances throughout the days and nights. Then, hit up the Late Night Cabaret at like 11 or so.

Do it!
