Philly Weekend Picks: 9/11-9/13

Sumer has “unofficially” come to an end, but the Philly festival season is in full bloom this weekend. The Philly Weekend Picks this week have tons of outdoor stuff for the family and adults. Weather should be good with a chance of rain Saturday afternoon.

FRINGE FESTIVAL continues on with its second week. We saw a couple of great performances last week and there’s a slew of great stuff coming in week two. Get out and see some live performances. We are lucky in Philly with the Fringe bringing some of the most talented artists in the world to our city. Purgatory is a dance piece on my must-see list. The festival runs through next weekend with shows throughout the city every night.

Spruce Street Harbor Park’s FALL FESTIVAL runs all weekend from 4:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. They invite you to celebrate fall at the waterfront. Each day will feature a wide selection of local beers from different states (menu TBA), activities and music. While you’re at Spruce Street Harbor Park Presented by Univest/Valley Green Bank, be sure to stop by Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest — tons of great activities there as well.

The 30th Annual Mushroom Festival is always the first weekend after Labor Day in Kennett Square. The Square is the world’s mushroom capital so naturally this is where the mushroom festival happens. This festival runs both Saturday and Sunday. Each year over 100,000 people and 200 vendors attend the festival. They have a mile stretch of culinary events, growing exhibits, and children’s entertainment.

The Philadelphia’s Beekeepers Guild presents the 6th ANNUAL HONEY FESTIVAL. The festival runs Fri-Sun and seeks to raise awareness about the importance of honey bees to our environment, our food supply and our economy, and to promote urban beekeeping and gardening. They have activities and demonstrations for the whole family throughout the weekend, including a scavenger hunt, bee beard, honey extraction demos, honey beer, beekeeping 101, and more. ALL THE EVENTS ARE FREE.

FRIDAY:

L7. Let me type that again, L7! Yeah, I know Twenty One Pilots are at Festival Pier, but come on. All the cool kids, young and old, will be at The Trocadero for the re-united L7 Concert. One of the greatest female punk/rock bands to ever. If you’re not familiar, shame on you. No better way to familiarize yourself then a live show at the Troc!

SATURDAY:

2015 Pennsylvania Coast Day is Saturday down at Penn’s Landing. This day is to celebrate everything great about Pennsylvania’s coastline. This family-friendly festival is free and goes 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday. The day will include free kayaking and pedal boating, remote-controlled model ship races, arts, crafts, face painting and more.

The 3rd Annual Philadelphia United Jazz Festival celebrates the long tradition of Philadelphia’s Jazz scene. The festival is on South Street between 15th and 16th and runs noon to 10:00 p.m. Great musicians will hit the stage all day and it’s free. Seems like a great chance to grab some beers at the PHS Pop-Up Garden across the street, Bob & Barbara’s or any of the other great spots on that block.

The 7th ANNUAL PILS PICNIC is at Johnny Brenda’s Saturday. The Pilsner is one of the great, classic beers. This day celebrates its greatness. The picnic runs noon til whenever and includes pilsners from Sly Fox, Troeg’s, Victory, Stoudt’s, Tired Hands, and Neshaminy brewing. More are supposed to be added. There’s a $5 picnic menu that includes fried chicken, deviled eggs, soft pretzels and more.

SUNDAY:

More family fun down at the waterfront. Celebrate Mexican Independence Day Sunday from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Penn’s Landing. This is another free event that will include arts, crafts, music, face painting, Mexican food, dancing and more. Entertainers include Mariachi Flores and Brazeros Musical de Durango.

Manayunk’s StrEAT Food Festival is Sunday. Main Street will be filled with food and dessert from over 50 of Philly’s food trucks. Vendors will also have homemade oils, spices, and jams from gourmet vendors. This s a great day out on Main Street for eating, shopping and drinking.

The 10th Annual GREENFEST PHILLY happens Sunday at Headhouse Square just off South Street. This is Philly’s largest environmental festival in the Philly area. There will be over 100 exhibitors and vendors where you can learn about living sustainably while having some fun. The event includes food, live music, demonstrations, kid-friendly activities, etc. This runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
