Philly Weekend Picks: October 2-4

Hurricane, no hurricane. Chances are it’s gonna be raining this weekend, but hopefully it stops enough to get out and about this weekend. Here is our Philly weekend picks from all the events going on in the city:

FRIDAY:

It’s FIRST FRIDAY so that means the local art galleries are open late tonight to display their new monthly exhibits. Yes, it’ll mean grabbing an umbrella and walking in the rain, but there shouldn’t be any real crowds to deal with.

There are plenty of galleries to check out in Old City from 5:00-9:00 p.m. along 2nd and 3rd Streets between Market and Race. If you go, don’t miss out on Arch Enemy Arts tucked away at 109 Arch Street. Arch might be our favorite gallery in the city. They usually have stunning and provocative pieces. This month’s exhibit features Maria Teicher and Kelly McKernan.

There are also a bunch of cool galleries up in Fishtown. Frankford Avenue Arts has a good list of participating First Friday galleries.

If you’re in the mood for art and wanna be dry and indoors, check out the Arden Theatre‘s retelling of Ovid’s classic myths in METAMORPHOSES. This production features a 2,600 gallon pool that represents a magical place where gods and mortals interact. The Arden usually does good work and a play featuring a pool has be interesting, no? Tickets are $36-$50, but it’s Friday! The show just opened yesterday and runs through November 1st.

Like 90’s indie rock? The legendary BUILT TO SPILL stop at Union Transfer Friday. Built is one of the more consistent, quality bands to come out of the era along with Dinosaur, Jr and Pavement. They have to be the best band to come out of Boise, Idaho. If you’re in the mood to good, stripped down, no bullshit music check out the show. You won’t regret it.

The amazing gender-blending CHRISTEENE is at Kung Fu Necktie Friday night. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen a show quite like Christeene. If you’re bugged out by punk rock “drag terrorists”, this might not be for you. That’s your loss. This has to be the best things going on in the city this weekend for entertainment value. Tickets are like $12.

SATURDAY:

The 10th Annual MIDTOWN VILLAGE FALL FESTIVAL is Saturday from 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.. The weather is currently predicted to clear up on Saturday afternoon so you should be able to squeeze in some good outdoor fun. The festival is good for all ages and features: artists, musicians, food, crafts, beer, etc. The festival takes place from Broad to 11th Street and from Market to Spruce. Enjoy the day!

The 5th Annual BLOCKTOBERFEST takes over South Street between Broad and 18th Street from noon to 9 p.m. This is an all-ages and free to attend event that bills itself as a celebration of beer, food, music, and Philly. You could actually attend both the Midtown Festival and Blocktoberfest.

SUNDAY:

E -A-G-L-E-S!
