Philly Weekend Picks: Nov 13-15

Here we go. It’s FRIDAY and time for the Jawnville Philly weekend picks. You know you got no plans for one of these days or nights.

FRIDAY:

The FRANKLIN SQUARE HOLIDAY FEST officially started Thursday, but there’s no reason not to stroll by Friday and check out the space. The Festival runs Nov 12 – Dec 31 and has a light show including over 50,000 lights in their Electrical Spectacle Holiday Light Show. The festival runs 4:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. each day and includes comfort food, local beers and hot beverages. They also have a Holiday Market for gifts.

The PHILADELPHIA ASIAN AMERICAN FESTIVAL kicks off this weekend and runs through November 22nd. This is the 7th annual festival of its kind where they seek to educate and expose people about films by Asian American filmmakers. The films show at two locations (International House, Asian Arts Initiative). They aren’t all subtitles, yo!

DILWORTH ICE RINK opens for the season Friday. In addition to skating outside in a great location, they have the Rothman Cabin. The Cabin is a heated tent with hot chocolate and food/drinks by Garces Events. The rink is open Monday through Thursday from noon to 9 p.m., Friday from noon to 11 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission to the rink is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 10 and under. Those who do not have their own ice skates can rent a pair for $9.

Hedgerow Theater’s production of DRACULA continues to run through November 22nd. I know Halloween is over, but don’t let that stop you from checking out this great production of a timeless classic.

Philly’s own DRIFTWOOD SOLDIER play Milkboy Friday night with Ben Caplan & the Casual Smokers. Driftwood Solder is one of our favorite local acts and one of the more unique bands in town. We’ve played them on the podcast. Do yourself a favor, if you like live music, check these guys out. Here are videos from each act.

SATURDAY:

LOVE YOUR PARK FALL SERVICE DAY is Saturday. They do this in the Spring and the Fall and is one of the more rewarding community events throughout the year. The event goes on a parks throughout the city. You register, show up in the morning, and help clean up a park in the community and meet neighbors or just other like-minded people/families. DO IT! Make sure you register so they bring enough supplies for you.

2015 BACON & BEER FESTIVAL is at the Armory on Saturday. Tickets are a bit pricey at $46.50 but you get to eat a ton of bacon, drink a ton of beer, and help raise money for Manna. The list looks to include over 30 restaurants making bacon and about the same amount of breweries. Obviously, you have to be 21 to enter.

PhilaMOCA and Miss Rose’s Sexploitation Follies present THRILL BILL Saturday night at 9:00. These events never disappoint. This one promises to be a night of “sword singing and bra flinging fun.” Performers include: Nina La Voix, Liberty Rose, Andrae Jean, Tesla Tease, Lulu Madly, Bette Machete, Donald Dashing and more.

Boot & Saddle hosts the FFA Comedy Jawn Saturday night. It’s $10 for a night of laughs featuring the talented John McKeever from Comedy Central’s Delco Proper. If you haen’t checked out Delco Proper what’s wrong with you? Four other comedians join McKeever for the night. Show starts at 8:00.
