Eagles Payroll Phucked

The Eagles have reportedly asked Jason Peters to take a pay cut. He is set to earnĀ $10.45 million in 2017 and carries a cap number of $11.2M. Peters is the highest paid Eagle this year.

Why would Peters agree to a pay cut? The Eagles have no one to replace him and he kind of plays an important position protecting QB Carson Wentz’s backside. Peters is old, but he was effective last year. He had his share of false starts, but other than that he may have been the Eagles best offensive lineman last year. The geeks over at Pro Football Focus ranked the Eagles offensive line as the 8th best in the NFL. They also happened to rank Jason Peters as their best overall lineman and he was their highest graded pass-blocking lineman.

The issue here isn’t Peters salary. The issue is the clusterphuck that is the Eagles payroll to do some questionable signings and a bunch of extensions that Roseman made in the past season.

If any offensive lineman should be taking a pay cut it’s Lane Johnson. I mean, that’s obvious. Vinny Curry’s number is astronomical. Other salaries that jump out after last year’s performances as inflated compared to production are Connor Barwin, Mychal Kendricks, Jason Kelce, Zach Ertz, Brent Celek. Cox, Curry, and Ertz are Roseman signings from last year. As is CHASE PHUCKING DANIEL. I wish we left the last “s” off Daniel for savings, but that’s not the cast. He’s the 6th highest paid player on this team. That is a joke. Even more of a joke is to approach a still-productive, future hall of famer to ask him to take a pay cut while Chase Daniel makes EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS.

Shout out to Ike Reese for putting the Eagles disastrous salary cap into perspective for me. According to Spotrac, which tracks sports payrolls, the Eagles look to have about $7M in free salary cap money for signings. That’s not good with the amount of holes the Eagles have to fill. To put that into perspective, check this out. The Patriots have $63M in cap space available. The Atlanta Falcons have $29M. Green Bay has $43M. The Steelers have $34 in cap space.

The Eagles have cap problems, but that ain’t Jason Peters’ fault. If anyone should be getting a pay cut this year it is definitely not him. I never thought I’d say it, but I might be missing Joe Banner….just a little. Come on, don’t you??
