Blessings & Blasphemy at L’Etage

Philly’s premiere and possibly only gutter folk duo, Driftwood Soldier, takes over L’Etage this Friday night for their record release party for Blessings & Blasphemy Friday March at 7:00 p.mBlessings is a split EP with one side featuring Driftwood-interpreted traditional gospel songs and original anti-religion anthems making up the other side.

Philly is home to a ton of great artists and bands, but we haven’t stumbled upon any as stripped down, raw, and unique as Driftwood Soldier. Each song plays like a riveting short story accompanied by sick bass lines, homemade foot percussions (suitcases, bottlecaps), and shredding mandolin play. Think The Avett Brothers but pissed off about the ways of the world and drunk on the devil’s juice.

The band just returned from a trek through the New England area and tracks such as Rosalee and from their last release, Scavenger’s Joy, have been getting solid play at some folk and AAA stations across the nation. These guys are gonna blow up soon so checking them out for a measly $11 at this intimate setting is a bahgain!

Also in the house for the show will be Katy Otto [Trophy Wife, Callowhill], Natalie Butts[Sunflights], Liana Moskowitz, and Chenda Cope [The Old Fashioneds, The Four Prophet String Band and every good Philly bluegrass/old time jam].

I’ve heard the EP. It’s crazy good. See ya Friday.

In the meantime, check out their latest video for the Tiny Desk contest:
