A Day in Jawnville: Dollar Dogs, the Wave, and a dude.

Last night as Citizens Bank Park was a spectacle that had nothing to do with the team itself. Au contraire, it’s the fans. Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park looked more like a minor league stadium in the middle of Wisconsin last night than the former baseball heaven we knew during pennant runs a decade ago.

For starters, it was Dollar Dog night. For some reason, puny, shriveled hot dogs for a dollar brings out the masses. Yes, I understand some families go to Dollar Dog nights because it’s more economical. But, don’t kid yourself. The ballpark isn’t packed with families on Dollar Dog nights. Its groups guys and millennials of both sexes waiting in lines for innings to stuff their faces with upwards of four or six hot dogs.

Look at these lines.

People are missing innings of a game for these hot dogs, like they can’t get them any night of the season. Yes, the Phillies suck, but this is what brings us out…Dollar Dogs?

Check out the sights of fans and their dollar dogs. The fixin’s bar were bonkers with workers frantically trying to keep the mustard, ketchup, and relish dispensers filled to avoid disgruntled dog consumers.

And then, with the Phillies up 9-5 in the top of the 6th, the fans busted out the wave.

And, fittingly so, the baseball gods punished the Phillies for the wave by having them not score another run and end up losing 10-9. When will we learn? The wave, at this point in our seasoned fandom?

And then, there was this dude. He wanted nothing more than to get onto the jumbotron with his sign and was repeatedly denied.  He couldn’t even get the Phanavision camera-guy’s attention in his own section. So, to toss the kid a bone, we’ll put him on Jawnville for a little exposure. Gotta love his tenacity. This was his fourth effort. We are guessing he didn’t make it because his sign was hard to read. As much as we could tell, it read “I Want to Go Home.” I’m guess that it was because the game ran late due to all the runs. It was written in pen instead of marker that maybe that wouldn’t translate on Phanavision so that’s why they ignored him.

Thanks for reading and sharing.
