Philly Weekend Preview: 2/6

Here we go with our weekend picks:

Get to The Winter Lodge at RiverRink on Penn’s Landing for cocktails, smores and fire pits. This is every weekend….for a while.

Valentine’s Day is coming. Here’s a great weekend opportunity to buy the woman in your life a great pair of shoes at discounted prices. Bus Stop Shoes at 4th and Fitzwater Streets is having their annual Winter Warehouse sale. Shoes are like 50-75% off. They have an okay selection of men’s shoes, but this is really for the ladies.  Plus, they have this awesome window display this month, which is worth checking out:

Philly Pops is going Motown all weekend long as they present Classic Soul at the Kimmel Center. The Pops will be playing hits from the likes of James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner and more. Vocalists Capathia Jenkins and Darius de Haas accompany the musicians.

Philadelphia’s great Peek-A-Boo Revue is back at it at The Trocadero presenting Thigh Highs & Bow Ties. I can’t describe this any better than they do so here it is: “a cabaret of marching bombshells, cheeky emcees, and booming eight-piece band for an evening of high-class debauchery. Sequin-clad stripteasing chorus girls will have you standing at attention all night long while the hosts (including Foxy) tickle and tantalize your funny bone. All of this will be backed up by the Striptease Orchestra along with the drop dead red head and singing chanteuse, Marlene Merlot!” This is absolute fun!

The Philadelphia Auto Show is still in town, running through the weekend. I highly recommend taking in this event and then maybe doing some Chinatown food. I went to the show last night (blog piece coming) and had a blast. And, I’m not a car-head. I drive a Honda Element. The old school cars on the first floor are worth checking out.

Yo, The Spinners are in town. Who doesn’t dig the Spinners? They are at the Keswick Theater Friday night.

legobrickParents, pay attention! The Franklin Institute opens its The Art of the Brick exhibit, which is the world’s largest display of lego art. Every kid loves Lego, as they should. You got time to go as it runs through September, but Opening Weekend is always good energy. Opening Day has a ton of activities for the kids like building a mosaic, a brick challenge, and touring a Lego house.

His Name is Alive is still doing their thing? Yes, they are. It’s over 20 years. You might have to be in your 40’s or perhaps a fan of the 4AD record label sound. His Name Is Alive is at Johnny Brenda’s Saturday night. If you’re not familiar, they’re a bit experimental and a bit atmospheric.

Speaking of Johnny Brenda’s, their First Saturday Brunch: The Breakfast Club is this Saturday. DJ Princess Basketcase spins 80’s new wave/synthpop while you sip Bloody Mary’s and grub

InLiquid is a great organization that supports and promotes visual artists in our community. This Saturday is their annual annual Benefit. The 15th of it’s kind. It’s a great event for networking, socializing, and supporting a fantastic local cause while checking out some great art. More than 250 participating local artists will be showing everything from fashion and jewelry to photography and paintings in the silent auction format. InLiquid’s Benefit v.15 is at the Crane Arts Building and runs like 7-10 p.m. with a VIP reception from 5-6:30.

Sunday, we would suggest heading to Winterfest on the River and do some ice skating.

Also, Sunday afternoon at the Trocadero is a Night of Short Films.  You can see three local Philly shorts: the world premiere of Jenna Remembers; HIVE “Extended Version”; and My Better Half. Also showing other shorts from the US, UK, Germany, Argentina, Japan and Spain. This is a 21+ event.
