Cheering Etiquette

To the guy at the local Philly pub cheering boisterously for his VCU Rams against the LaSalle Explorers, you sir, were in poor taste.

I get it that it’s your alma mater. I get it that VCU has had a rough stretch of luck going from a top 12 team to losing one of their better players to injuries and possibly dropping out of the Top 25. However, there is no need to be screaming and hollering like it’s an Eagles game, not when your out-of-town alma mater is playing a local squad.

One needs to respect the locale you’re in. I’ve watched Phillies games in San Francisco among Giants fans. Sure, I wear my gear, but I’m not screaming and celebrating obnxiously when something goes the Phillies way. It’s a matter of respect.

Obviously, there were LaSalle alums in the pub, which raised tensions a bit. Luckily, the basketball gods shined on LaSalle and they won in 2 OTs. That just serves to prove the point. Support your teams. Cheer for your teams. When in the house/locale of your competitor, root tastefully and with class. Unless, it’s the Cowboys or the Penguins. VCU/LaSalle isn’t near that level of rivalry.

Disclosure: I spent a year at LaSalle.
