A Nod to a Taqueria

After watching the Eagles run all over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, I changed out of my Sunday sweatpants and ventured over to Mission Taqueria for the first time to play in the Johnny Goodtimes Autumn Invitational Quizzo. It’s basically a tournament of uber nerd-teams who qualify for an invite by excelling at Goodtimes’ weekly regional quizzos.

Enough with that. This was my first time in the building that used to house the great Nodding Head Brewery and Restaurant at 1516 Sansom Street, just above the legendary Oyster House. In fact, Mission is owned by the people behind the Oyster House.

I had spent many a night drinking in the Nodding Head space. The change to Mission Taqueria is dramatic. Mission Taqueria has a clean, modern ambiance with cool neon lighting and lots of white. It’s a complete 360 from Nodding Head’s traditional pub vibe with warm-colored wood throughout, but it works nicely. Plants line the walls. They hang from the ceiling. The bar is now concrete. Mission has communal style white-washed picnic tables throughout. A foosball and shuffleboard table have also been added.

I don’t normally love concrete bars, but it works here. The only complaint might be to add a foot rail to the bar.

My party sampled a variety of salsas and grubbed on some tacos. All of which was tasty and fresh. Their coconut-hazelnut salsa was probably my favorite. I’ve never tasted anything like it in world of salsas. I would definitely recommend a trip to Mission Taqueria. They have a good selection of tequila based cocktails and the menu has something for everyone. Plus, the place just looks cool.
