2017 NBA Draft: Guards Shooting Percentages

Tomorrow is the Lottery Show for the NBA where ping-pong balls will determine where the Sixers pick and how many lottery picks they will get.

The consensus top three guards are Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, and De’Aaron Fox. The scoop is that Ball and Fox cannot shoot so they can’t play off the ball and do not fit with Ben Simmons. Malik Monk is showing up 8th in a bunch of mocks, probably due to his size and complete annihilation by NC’s larger and quicker Justin Jackson.

Below is a comparison of shooting stats for the top three guards.

Player FG% eFG% 3pt % FT%
Markelle Fultz 47.6 53.5 41.3 64.9
Lonzo Ball 55.1 66.8 41.2 67.3
De’Aaron Fox 47.8 49.7 24.6 74

What jumps off the page at me is Fox’s 74% from the free throw line being the highest. Fox doesn’t have an ugly or broken shot and the 74% proves that he can improve from three-land with practice and dedication.

Also, Ball and his ugly shot shoots basically the same from 3 as Fultz. Yeah, I’ve heard that Ball’s ugly shot will be blocked at the next level. Ball struggled against Fox in the tourney, which isn’t a surprise. Fox will be an elite defender at the NBA level and Ball probably won’t face defenders that good game in and game out. And, Ball didn’t have a problem getting his shot off. He just had an off night.

Ball also crushes Fultz and Fox in FG% and eFG%.

Just something to keep in mind as the lottery and draft approach and the Fultz hype is everywhere.
