A Day in Jawnville: Greensgrow Farms

20 years ago, Mary Seton Corboy and Tom Sereduk rented a lot at Gaul & Cumberland that sat on a Superfund brownfield in the Kensington section (Cione for us Philly old-heads) of Philly to start an urban farming. I remember it well because I thought they were crazy. I lived a few blocks away on Huntingdon Street.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. Their vision has become grown into the amazing Greensgrow Farms. If you aren’t familiar with Greensgrow, shame on you, particularly if you like fresh vegetables and gardening.

I recently visited Greensgrow (2501 E. Cumberland Street, 19125) with my partner so that she could load up on soil, compost, plants, perennials, annuals, herbs, etc. This has become a yearly ritual. Back in the day, we used to travel to nurseries in Jerseys or, worst yet, purchase similar items at Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Greensgrow makes trips to NJ, the burbs, or big box stores obsolete for any Philadelphia resident.

Their selection of plants, herbs, and gardening supplies of all types can satisfy the needs of every amateur gardener and the advanced perfectionists.

Not only that, Greensgrow is a farmers market and educational center. It’s a greenery oasis in the middle of Kensington with live farm animals like chickens and Milkshake the pig.

We can’t recommend this place high enough and should’ve reviewed this years ago. Violation on us. The vision of an urban farm in Kensington has been fully realized.

Take a look at the sights and then get your ass there.
