Ty Kelly – Utility Player & Renaissance Man

Who doesn’t love the adorable Phillies 28 year-old utility player Ty Kelly? You know, the dude currently hitting .211. He’s also the guy who had the pinch-hit double off Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale to drive in the winning run.

Here’s what you might not know about Ty Kelly.

He grew up with Chipper Jones as his favorite player. In an interview with Metsmerized Online, he stated:

Ty: I was a big Chipper Jones fan. I grew up in the ’90s, so I think everyone liked Chipper Jones and everybody liked Griffey (Jr). I don’t know if I fashioned my game after one player, but I think kids would go into the backyard and try to match their swings up with guys in the big leagues, and I always really liked Chipper’s swing from both sides.

Ty grew up in the Dallas area so I have no idea why he’d go Chipper Jones. Someone better tip him off not to utter that name in Citizens Bank Park.

In that same interview, Ty discusses a screenplay he’s been working on for a few years.

As far as my screenplay, I’ve had this idea for probably five years now. And over the last year, I guess I’ve started to really put it together as much as I can. So I’m maybe like a third of the way through the actual script. And it’s been a really fun process, you know being in New York people have reached out to me and tried to help out. I’ve made a lot of good connections and good resources, and it’s been really fun, and hopefully it’s good.

Ty is also a musician. He’s got a Youtube page urboytk11 that you should check out where he does some covers and original songs. Here is his cover of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Under the Bridge:

This is an original work. It might be the best original music we’ve heard from a local athlete. This song has a nice melody and hook. Ty might wanna get some vocal lessons to put it over the top.

AND….the guy does comedy sketches with Matt Paré that are pretty damn funny. Where does this guy’s talent end?

Ty’s acting is off the wall in this skit.

He acts. He writes. He’s a singer-songwriter. He hits doubles off Chris Sale. This guy may be the greatest true utility-man in all of sports. He’s definitely the most versatile athlete in town. Ty Kelly…Renaissance Man.
